Body massage oil Malaysia, eighteen-herb warming formula

Herbal massage oil ingredients and their benefits

  • The warming herbs. Ginger, cinnamon, clove, black pepper and nutmeg. These give the oil its signature heat, the sensation that builds as you work it in.
  • The kitchen herbs. Garlic, onion and asafoetida sound unusual in skincare, and they are exactly what traditional Malay and South Asian massage oils have always used. They also account for much of the smell.
  • The grounding base. Vetiver, pandan and sappanwood add depth and the oil’s natural dark colour, which is why it can mark fabric.
  • The carrier. Palm kernel oil, with aloe and citronella. Heavier than coconut oil, which is what gives it the slow glide a firm massage needs.

How to use a body massage oil at home

  • Warm it first. Between your palms, for a few seconds. Cold oil makes muscles tense.
  • Less than you think. A coin-sized amount. Too much and hands slide without grip.
  • Work toward the heart. Upward on arms and legs, the direction therapists use.
  • Use body weight, not fingers. Lean in rather than gripping, and your hands last longer.
  • Straight after a shower. Warm, damp skin absorbs best.
  • Wear something you don’t mind marking, and give it a few minutes to sink in.
