Herbal soap ingredients, turmeric, cinnamon, vetiver and patchouli

Turmeric in a soap bar, and the question everyone asks

Kunyit has been part of Malay beauty practice for as long as anyone has records of it. Rubbed into skin before weddings, mixed into pastes during confinement, stirred into everything from curry to jamu. Putting it in a soap bar is less an innovation than a convenience.

What turmeric contributes here is partly the texture. Ground root powder gives the bar its grit, alongside rice and glutinous rice, which is what lets it exfoliate without any tool. It also gives the soap its colour, that warm brown that the formulation takes its name from.

Patchouli, the scent people either love or do not

Patchouli is the most opinionated ingredient in this bar. Dark, earthy, faintly sweet, with something almost damp about it, like soil after rain. It has no middle ground. People who like it tend to like it a great deal.

It is in the formulation for a reason beyond character. Patchouli is a base note, one of the slowest-evaporating materials in perfumery, which means the scent stays with you after the shower rather than rinsing away with the lather. Vetiver sits beneath it, adding a dry, rooty depth, while the cinnamon and wild ginger lift it with warmth. The result is something closer to an old apothecary than a modern shower gel.

If you would rather something lighter, the Green Formulation is fresher and more herbal, and the White Formulation is the mildest of the three. All four bars, including the Black Formulation facial soap, come together in the Heritage Soap Collection.
